Dear Dean, we are doing a small bathroom remodel and would like to redo the shower with large 18×18 travertine colored porcelan tiles on walls and 6×6 tiles on shower floor, with some type of glass/stone mosaic border 3/4 up the wall. The shower is 5’wide x 31″ deep x 7’tall (8’tall if we go to ceiling). I like the look of the shower you did with 24″ porcelan tiles.
We are thinking of doing the 18″ tiles diagonally on the walls- and maybe a solid row of 4x 6 mosaics spaced horizontally at about 50 or 60″ above the floor.
My questions are – I would like to have the walls “floated with cement” as I have read it is still the best method. Do you rec doing the 1 step method , or the Scratch coat and then mud coat.
I am getting confused , but am reading that if you do the 1 step float you must have a solid surface like Durock or water resistant sheetrock behind it? And do you still like the Hot Mop vs the new Schlutter membrane systems?
PS- also, do you have any shampoo niches you rec or sell ? thanks so much for your help.

I definately recommend hotmop, lath, scratch and float method. That is the best and only way I do it…..It’s a tried and true method. All the soap niches I do are typically built in, although I have created some corner shelves out of stone and/or tile… If you like I could come and give you an estimate on your project? My contact # is 949-370-3225 and email is deanatkinstile@aol.com… Thanks!

HI! There is a picture that you posted that i would like to copy. You used travertine in 3×6, and 4×4 at bottom. I’m trying to figure out if it is scabos. Anyhow, I like the layout, and the colors.
